Ontario government pledges $75 million to restore Toronto to Timmins – Toronto rail service

TIMINS, Ont. – The Ontario government is investing $75 million to restore rail passenger service in northeastern Ontario, according to its own statements for the first time in more than a decade.

premier Doug Ford made the primary announcement in Timmins after traveling from Toronto aboard an Ontario Northland train.

The government on Sunday released an updated initial business case for rail passenger services between Timmins and Toronto, while future work on a preferred 16-stop route will include a rail link to Cochrane and then a link to the Polar Bear Express service to Moosonee.

The year-round service, which the province says could begin in the mid-2020s, would allow tourists to visit the north and allow northerners to travel to the provincial capital for sporting events and access medical care.

The service, which ended in 2012, will range from four to seven days a week, depending on seasonal travel demand.

Ontario Northland currently operates four buses daily between Toronto and North Bay and one to two buses daily from North Bay to Timmins and Cochrane.

“The restoration of this rail service will not only be a huge boost for families up here, but for local tourism businesses who can once again show the world the kind of beauty that can only be found in Northern Ontario,” said Ford.

The government estimates annual ridership to be between 40,000 and 60,000 by 2041, while the Cochrane link would allow rail service to reach 176,000 residents.
