WHEN you first see this optical illusion, you may not realize that it contains multiple triangles.
In fact, the picture is made up of several triangles, many more than meets the eye, and only a fraction of the population can see them all.
One TikTok personality, Hectic Nick, shared the illusion and it quickly went viral, amassing 1.6 million views and over 135,000 comments.
The sunglass-clad mystery content creator revealed the confusing triangle image and urged viewers to focus.
“Only one percent of people can get this right,” Nick said. “How many triangles are in this picture?”
He gave viewers a moment to study the image.
“It sounds easy, but it’s not easy,” he teased. The large, primary triangle was immediately recognizable, as were some smaller triangles towards the top, but the rest of the image is filled with other shapes.
“Let me know how many you think there are,” Nick implored viewers.
TikTok users took to the comments section to share their guesses.
“Look at the top forms,” one viewer attempted to explain. “It’s a triangle and it’s three.”
Another argued the number was only one. “The others are squares or incomplete triangles,” the commentator asserted.
The most popular guess was four, while many viewers also said they counted seven or 15 triangles in the illusion.
A viewer said he saw three triangles, then commented again, changing his guess to four.
“Guys it’s one,” wrote an angry viewer. “It’s just cut up.”
All of these estimates were actually lower than the number of triangles contained in the image.
Other viewers crossed the threshold and guessed 24, 42 or even more than 100 triangles.
To find the actual answer, remember that you can compose triangles from the smaller shapes.
They don’t all have to be equilateral triangles either. Some have narrow bases and longer sides.
Are you ready for the final count?
The number of triangles included in the picture is eighteen.
If you have trouble counting them all, treat the lines in the picture as a grid and construct triangles of different sizes row by row and column by column.
And if you got the answer right away, congratulations – you’ve earned the right to brag when you share the illusion with friends!
