In a conversation with Gilbert Arenas on the “No Chill” podcast, Kenyon Martin looks back at the most difficult players to defend. He started by sharing his experience protecting Kobe Bryant. “I was on top of him, he shot that thing out of the glass with his left hand. I was like – “Yeah, stop doing that, don’t do that again, dawg.”

Next Martin chose Tim Duncan. He explains how his usual tactics against the big boys won’t work for the ‘fundamentals’. However, Martin was very proud when he did not allow Timmy to make a successful long shot. “The only hit I wouldn’t give him was the one on the bank. I was like – “you don’t do that to me, you can take anything else.”

Kenyon Martin chose Shaquille O’Neal as the most difficult player to defend of all time.

Podcast co-host Josiah Johnson asked Martin – “How does it feel to have to protect a guy like Shaq?” Martin had a very simple answer – “Impossible”. Furthermore, he went on to explain that he is not Shaq’s main defender but will have to pick him up during the transition or timeout.

“I am a double. I am a kind man. He caught it, wherever I was on the floor I could pass, I could double it and get out. That’s what I am with him.” Martin added that getting older is the only thing that slows Shaq down. “There is no guardian here like when you protected Shaq. Trust me, nothing can stop that man. ”
