A man faces jail time after pleading guilty to an assault that left his victim in a coma.

Noel Reynolds was in hospital for more than three weeks after being beaten by William Longworth.

The one-punch attack left the 37-year-old in a state of unconsciousness from which he never recovered.

The 36-year-old carried out the attack in North Shields, a town on the northeast coast.

It happened on the evening of December 10 and weeks of efforts to resuscitate Mr Reynolds ensued.

Despite the best efforts of doctors, he died in hospital on January 3.

Longworth has now pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Newcastle Crown Court.

His partner Marie Office, 37, admitted actions aimed at distorting the course of justice by providing Longworth with a false alibi.

The couple will be convicted at a December 22 court hearing.

Earlier, Detective Inspector Louise Jenkins said: “First of all, our thoughts remain with Noel’s loved ones and we will continue to offer his family professional support as they continue to grapple with what is happening.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank those who supported our investigation and the local community for their support and collaboration.”
