Omicron accounts for more than half of COVID-19 cases in New Mexico

Dr David Scrase, acting cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Department of Health, said Omicron cases now account for about 50% to 60% of all new cases. He expects it to account for 100% of new cases in a week or two.

Scrase also said hospitals are still struggling — there are only nine ICU beds and 40 surgery beds in the state. The shortfall is due to 497 COVID patients in hospitals.

“They’re still having a hard time, they’re having a hard time finding staff, they’re struggling to change shifts,” says Scrase. “They’re trying to get work done, they still have long ER waits and delays in care.”

In the last month, unvaccinated people accounted for about 66% of new COVID-19 cases, more than 83% of hospitalizations and 88% of deaths.

New Mexico has also applied CDC’s recommendation to stay at home for five days after testing positive – as long as you have no symptoms.

  • If you test positive, CDC guidelines say you should stay home, in a room away from other people, for five days.
  • You should take another test at the end of five days, but it is not required.
  • If you have symptoms after five days, you can leave the house – but must wear a mask for another five days.
  • Stay home until your fever is gone for 24 hours and tell anyone you have been in close contact with about your positive result.
  • If you have symptoms but test negative, the instruction is to take the second test within two days.

State health officials are also reminding people what to do if you are a close contact:

  • If you’ve updated your vaccines, wear a mask for 10 days and test on a fifth day if possible.
  • If you haven’t been vaccinated, stay home for five days, then take the test and wear a mask for another five days.
