Oldham: Murder suspect arrested after man ‘stabbed to death’

A murder investigation is underway after a man was fatally stabbed outside an Indian restaurant.

Police are questioning a suspect after an incident in Oldham town center in the early hours of this morning.

A man in his 40s was found stabbed at 4.20am and died on the way to hospital.

The deceased has not been publicly identified, but specially trained officials are working with his family.

Officers arrested a man in his 30s and continue to question him on suspicion of murder.

Initial investigations indicate the stabbing followed an altercation near the Light of Bengal restaurant.

Police said a “full and thorough” investigation was underway, with a major cordon remaining in place on Union Street while officers at the scene conducted an investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the police.

Detective Superintendent Simon Hurst said “a dedicated team of detectives” is working “at pace” and “we are doing everything we can to support the man’s family at this terrible time”.

He continued: “We have already spoken to a large number of witnesses who were in town overnight and we want to make sure we speak to any individuals who may have seen something of significance in the moments before and after this devastation might have incident.

“This is understandably shocking news for the public waking up today and as such we are conducting a wide range of extensive and complex investigations – including into the large city center scene – to ensure we bring those responsible to justice.”
