Old photos show Michael Knowles in drag
Conservative pundit Michael Knowles was thrust into the spotlight when he gave a CPAC speech calling for the eradication of “transgenderism” from public life. As well as complaining about trans rights, Knowles has another conservative bogeyman: drag shows.
But old photos of Knowles, unearthed by the Daily Dot, show he wore a dress more than once in 2016.
Knowles, along with his Daily Wire associates, have been on a crusade to defame and demonize the trans community amid nationwide crackdowns on transgender rights.
He has also spoken out openly about drag shows in recent years, which goes hand-in-hand with the anti-trans rhetoric of the right.
A 2020 tweet from Knowles called, “Drag is funny because men aren’t supposed to wear dresses. It seems that our dysfunctional society no longer understands any of these facts.”
Knowles’ old Instagram posts show him on two separate occasions as Elizabeth Warren in a wig and dress – meant to represent a stereotypical Native American outfit.
Conservatives have long complained that Warren is using her Native American heritage as a political prop, particularly when she was running for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president.
The first instance of Knowles wearing a dress appears to be from a past Halloween, as the photo Knowles posted is dated November 1, 2016.
Knowles seemed so fond of the drag costume that he wore it again for an election special hosted by the Daily Wire in 2016.
A live stream of the event continues to be available on Facebook, and Knowles’ performance begins at 3:23 p.m.
In the video, Knowles made offensive remarks about Native Americans, using stereotypical terms like “wampum,” “wigwam,” and “war tribes” and claiming he would take “a lot of scalps.”
He posted two more photos of the outfit on his Instagram.
Knowles isn’t the first conservative to be openly opposed to drag performance — and recently unearthed an old photo of them in a dress. The Daily Dot previously reported that Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee wore women’s clothing during a high school powder puff game in the 1970s.
In response, Lee claimed that attributing his concerns to drag and wearing a dress was “ridiculous.”
Lee then signed one of the country’s first drag bills, preventing drag performances in public or places where minors could see them.
Knowles did not respond to the Daily Dot’s request for comment.
