Ohio: Pregnant mother and unborn child die after 2-year-old son shoots her | US News

A pregnant mother and her unborn baby died after her two-year-old son picked up a gun and shot her in the back, police said.
Laura Ilg, 31, called 911 and reported that she was 33 weeks pregnant and her toddler shot her, according to Norwalk Police.
“IM up. “I need help,” Ilg said in an emergency call released by the police.
The dispatcher asked, “Is your front door unlocked?”
“Please tell them to break in, hurry up,” Ilg said, then started screaming, according to NBC News.
Ilg’s husband Alek also called 911 and reported that she had been screaming for him to call the police.
Police arrived three minutes after the initial call at 1:14 p.m. last Friday. They forced their way into the Ohio home and rendered assistance while Ilg explained what had happened.
She was taken to Fisher Titus Medical Center and had an emergency C-section.
Less than an hour after the first emergency call, Ilg’s unborn son was pronounced dead. The mother was pronounced dead shortly afterwards, police said.
Police secured a SIG Sauer P365, shell casings and the loaded magazine from the home. The gun was kept in a bedside table in the couple’s bedroom, they told investigators. They also had a 12-gauge shotgun and rifle in their home.
“The gun was omitted, but it should not have been accessible to the child,” Norwalk Police Chief David Smith told WOIO. “Apparently she didn’t know he was in the room at the time.”
An investigation is ongoing. No charges were brought.
Ilg’s unborn son would have been her second child.
“She always wanted to be a mother and wife,” says Ilg’s obituary.
“She enjoyed going to church and spending time with her family.”
Ilg was an avid reader, had a particular fondness for Harry Potter, did crafts, played board games, and “was a kid at heart,” according to her obituary.
The visit for Ilg and her unborn son Talisen took place on Friday.
