Officials warn parents to keep an eye on children after teenage girl chased by coyote in Hingham – Boston News, Weather, Sports

HINGHAM, MASS. (WHDH) – Officials are warning parents to keep a close eye on their children after a teenage girl was chased by a coyote in Hingham on Tuesday, prompting the city’s Animal Control Unit to step up patrols in the area.

The city’s animal welfare agency is stepping up patrols as many of the children walk to school after witnesses said a coyote chased a teenage girl and her dog on Tuesday.

Chris Tomechek said his kids were about to go to school when his daughter saw what happened to her young neighbor on Patriots Way.

“She was walking her dog like she does most mornings and I noticed that the coyote started running in the direction she was walking and it’s not normal to walk a coyote like that at 8:15 am to see running fast,” said Tomecheck, who quickly jumped into the action. “I ran right out the door and started screaming, ‘Get out, get out, get out!’ … It was the size of a German Shepherd, so it was a very large coyote when I was outside [I] Luckily I was able to scare the coyote away.”

Jake Lebretton, 10, saw it all happen while he was at school with some friends.

“We’re seeing this giant coyote running after her right now,” Jake said. “I was really scared, I just didn’t really know what to do.”

“The next thing we get is a text message saying the kids were being chased by a coyote and animal control was imminent and all hell broke loose,” said Jake’s father Matt Lebretton, who believes the coyote problem near South Elementary “has reached a breaking point .

“This story could have been very different, and the state really needs to come up with a plan to take action,” said Matt Lebretton, adding that he has started reaching out to elected officials.

“These coyotes are wild animals, you have to stay alert,” Tomechek said.
