NRL superstars Latrell Mitchell and Jack Wighton have faced charges over an alleged 3.45am fight

The irony of the alleged Latrell Mitchell and Jack Wighton 3:45 stoush is that Mitchell should stay home with Wighton. Instead, the two players were in police cells.
NRL superstars Latrell Mitchell and Jack Wighton have been released from police custody and will face trial later this month after being arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning over an incident outside a Canberra nightclub.
Mitchell was charged with resisting arrest and beating, while Wighton was also charged after the two had a fight between themselves that witnesses said was little more than a friendly wrestle.
The incident resulted in both players being arrested by authorities and spending the night in police cells.
“Around 3:45 a.m. today (Sunday, February 5, 2023), ACT Police responded to reports of a disturbance near a nightclub on Bunda Street in the city,” an ACT Police statement said.
“Two men – a 30-year-old from Bywong, NSW and a 25-year-old man from Chifley, NSW – were arrested at the scene. The 30-year-old was charged with fighting in a public place and violating a disqualification order, while the 25-year-old was charged with fighting in a public place, fighting and resisting a state official.
It is now unlikely that either player will play next weekend’s Indigenous All Stars match in New Zealand.
They will appear in court on Wednesday, February 22, the week before the NRL kicks off.
The couple had been out to celebrate Wighton’s 30th birthday.
The news will come as a shock to Rabbitohs and Raiders fans, who know the pair have been such close friends for a long time.
The irony was that Mitchell and his partner were supposed to be staying at Wighton’s house that night.
Instead, the two players were in police cells.
Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner drove Wighton home from the police station on Sunday morning while Mitchell was reportedly returning to Sydney.
The birthday party was held at Walsh’s Hotel in Queanbeyan, but the incident happened later in the night while they were visiting Canberra’s Fiction nightclub.

The NRL released a statement Sunday after News Corp published the story.
“The NRL Integrity Unit has been made aware of this matter and is in liaison with the Rabbitohs and Raiders clubs.”
South Sydney and Canberra have also released statements confirming the NRL Integrity Unit has been briefed on the matter.
