A reported situation involving active gunmen near a North Carolina community college prompted the campus to go into lockdown Tuesday morning.

Southwestern Community College’s Jackson campus in Sylva was “immediately locked down,” according to Fox News.

In an alert broadcast just before 10.30am, the school advised staff to secure students in the building and lock classroom and office doors. The lockdown was to remain in effect until the administration or law enforcement officials said the situation was clear.

The school issued an update at 11.05am stating that its latest information indicated “this is not an active shooter situation at this time”.

“Law enforcement officials tell us they are on the verge of apprehending a criminal who is at large. Subject initially fled to a wooded area behind Lowe’s,” the school explained. ‘We will send another update within 15 minutes.’
