A driver who ran over and killed a woman in her 90s while trying to hit another car has been jailed for manslaughter.

Michael Irons, 26, mowed down Ivy Warnes, 96, as she was being helped across the road by her daughter on March 8 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

The frail pensioner died in hospital after suffering serious injuries.

Irons had attempted to ram his silver VW Golf into an Audi Q7 with which he was involved in a minor traffic accident earlier that day.

Police said the Audi’s occupants challenged Irons before he reversed into another vehicle and drove away, intentionally scraping his car along the side of the parked Audi.

Irons then dropped off his partner and young daughter and drove back to the scene, where he purposely approached the parked Audi Q7 to ram the vehicle.

He then plowed into Ivy before colliding with the Audi and attempting to flee the scene.

He was arrested by onlookers who witnessed the clashes.

Police said he was racially abusive towards members of the public during his arrest.

In custody, Irons provided a breath test reading of 55 micrograms, which is above the legal limit of 35.

He was sentenced Friday to 10.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter, causing fatal injury, driving while drinking and causing death without insurance.

Norwich Crown Court also imposed an extended license period of four years.

Irons was banned from driving for 10 years and must pass an advanced driving test before he can get his driver’s license back.

Ivy’s daughter Jill said her mother was the victim of a horrific and senseless incident, adding, “The tragic circumstances of mother’s death will haunt us forever.”

DI Dave McCormack of Norfolf Constabulary said: “Iron’s actions on the day have left a family without a dearly loved mother and our thoughts remain with them.

“This was a case of appalling driving standards, with Irons showing a complete disregard for other road users.

“Not only did he drive an uninsured vehicle dangerously, but he also used that vehicle as a weapon to intentionally engage in violence with another road user – claiming the life of an elderly pedestrian in the process.”
