NHS to hire 300,000 doctors, nurses and health workers in new plan | British News

More than 300,000 nurses and doctors are expected to be employed in the NHS as part of a range of plans to improve healthcare.
Opportunities to reduce the time doctors spend in medical school, increase the number of local NHS staff and increase the number of apprenticeships are other ideas to help address the severe staffing shortages in the NHS.
The NHS’ first long-term workforce plan has been hailed as a “great opportunity” to put the service’s staffing on a sustainable footing over the next 15 years.
Officials warned that without action, there could be 360,000 vacancies in healthcare by 2037.
Healthcare leaders, who have previewed the details of the plan but have not yet released the full document, claim the strategy will help meet the challenges of a growing and aging population while addressing recruitment and retention issues that are currently increasing lead to serious staff shortages.
There are currently 112,000 vacancies across the NHS in England.
Officials say the outlined plans, along with new retention measures, could result in the health service having at least 60,000 additional doctors, 170,000 additional nurses and 71,000 additional health workers by 2036-37.
Alongside the plan, officials have asked the Physician Oversight Board, the General Medical Council (GMC) and medical schools to consult on introducing four-year medical degrees (currently five years) and medical internships that would allow students to start working six months early .
Officials said the new plans include the following:
Doubling the number of medical school positions to 15,000 by 2031, with more positions in areas with the greatest doctor shortages
Increase GP apprenticeships by 50% to 6,000 by 2031
Nearly doubling the number of adult caregiver apprenticeships by 2031
Expanding apprenticeships so students can “earn while they learn” – It is estimated that by 2028, one in six (16%) of all training programs for clinical workers, including doctors, nurses and other health workers, will be delivered through completed apprenticeships 850 doctor training programs
A 40% increase in nursing apprenticeships over five years
New medical schools in parts of the country facing the greatest staff shortages.
The staffing plan aims to increase the number of native NHS workers as the international pool of health workers is increasingly taken up by other countries.
Meanwhile, the NHS will cut spending on expensive staff, with public health leaders being told to cut the bill by £10billion by 2036/37.
Nurses are also allowed to start work immediately after graduating in May, instead of in September as before.
Officials said the document will also place a “renewed focus on employee retention” — with more flexible work options and better career development.
It is hoped that these plans, which are yet to be finalized, along with pension system reforms, could result in up to 130,000 employees remaining at the company NHS Settings longer.
The new plan – which was commissioned and approved by ministers – was backed by a Government investment of £2.4 billion to fund additional education and training places over a five-year period, on top of existing funding commitments .
Health officials have also agreed that the plan must be revised every two years to reflect changing needs across the service.
Amanda Pritchard, chief executive of NHS England, said: “The publication of our first-ever NHS long-term workforce plan gives us a unique opportunity to put staffing on a sustainable footing for years to come.”
“As we seek to adapt to new and increasing demand for healthcare services worldwide, this long-term plan is the first step in a major and much-needed expansion of our workforce to ensure we have the staff we need to serve the patients need.”
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, “To mark the 75th anniversary of our health service, this government is making the largest single expansion this year.” NHS Education and training in its history.
“This is an investment plan and a reform plan.”
“Over the coming years, we will train twice as many doctors and an additional 24,000 additional nurses per year, helping to reduce waiting lists and improve patient care.”
“We will do more to keep our shine.” NHS Strengthen staff and reform the way the healthcare system works to make it fit for the future.
“This is something no other government has done and will be one of the most significant commitments I will make as Prime Minister – to serve as the cornerstone for our vision of a better, more modern healthcare system and to put the NHS on a secure footing. ‘ long term.’
But Wes Streeting, the Labor Party’s shadow health secretary, claimed the Conservatives were taking ideas from his party.
He said: “The Conservatives have finally admitted they have no ideas of their own and are therefore embracing Labour’s plan to train the doctors and nurses the NHS needs.” They should have done this a decade ago – the NHS would have it today enough staff.
“Instead, the health service is short of 150,000 staff and it will be years before this announcement has any impact.”
