MANCHESTER, NH (WHDH) — A 7-year-old boy who was in a coma after multiple injuries, including significant burns, has died in New Hampshire, according to officials.
The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office and the Manchester Police Department on Wednesday announced the start of a suspicious death investigation after Jaevion Riley died while being treated at a Massachusetts hospital.
In Wednesday’s announcement, officials said Riley had died the day before, on January 24, a week after rescue workers first found him in a flat in Manchester.
He had been located on Eastern Avenue after police received a report of a child suffering “serious burns to his face and body” and “not conscious or breathing”, according to a statement from Manchester Police Department.
Two days after Jaevion was taken to a hospital and eventually transferred to another facility in Massachusetts for further care, the boy’s father, Murtadah Mohammad, 25, was arrested on charges of assault, falsifying evidence and endangering the child’s welfare.
The child’s mother, Rainah Riley, told 7NEWS her son sustained his injuries in his father’s care.
“The circumstances of the child’s death are being actively investigated while the cause and manner of death are being investigated,” the NH AG office said. “The Attorney General’s Office continues to work closely with the Hillsborough County Attorney’s Office and the Manchester Police Department.”
