The National Football League will postpone some games this weekend due to an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, among players, multiple sources told CNBC on Friday.
The NFL’s expected move, which will be the first to postpone professional football games this season, comes as the National Hockey League said it would postpone some teams’ games because similar reason.
More than 100 NFL players are reported to have tested positive for coronavirus in the past week.
Sources told CNBC that the Cleveland Browns vs Las Vegas Raiders game will be moved to Monday night, while the Seattle Seahawks vs Los Angeles Rams game will be moved to Tuesday.
The Associated Press reports that the NFL will also postpone the Washington Soccer Team’s game against the Eagles in Philadelphia to Tuesday.
On Thursday, the NFL updated their protocols regarding the coronavirus, saying “the changes we are making today are intended to address the increase in cases and the introduction of the Omicron variant. .”
The federation said it would ask all clubs to immediately “take precautions that have been proven effective: wearing a mask regardless of vaccination status, meetings remotely or out of town.” outdoors, eliminating in-person meals and no outside guests during team travel.”
And the NFL has adjusted “return to engagement requirements for people who have recovered from COVID-19.”
The NHL on Friday said it is extending the game postponement for the Calgary Flames through the team’s previously scheduled game against the Seattle Kraken next Thursday.
The Hockey League also said it was postponing the games of both the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panther through the completion of the NHL break in their schedule for December 26.
The Flames will have six games postponed, Avalanche will see four games postponed, and three games postponed for the Panthers.
