Inside info on Queen’s ‘smitten’ relationship with her grandchildren
To everyone around her, she’s “Her Majesty” or “Ma’am,” but to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, the Queen is simply: “Gan-gan.”
And Queen Elizabeth loves the nickname and takes her role — which shows her joy in choosing gifts for her 12 great-grandchildren, teaching them to ride a horse and even enjoying a splash in Buckingham Palace’s pool — very seriously.
When the Queen ascended the throne in 1952, she was a young mother to Charles and Anne, and even after the arrival of Andrew and Edward, a combination of strict nannies and royal duties meant she didn’t have much time for her children.
Not so when she became “Granny” with the birth of Peter Philips in 1977 and fell in love with him, his sister Zara, Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
The 96-year-old is also particularly close to her youngest grandchildren, Lady Louise, 18, and James, Viscount Severn, 14 – the children of Prince Edward and Sophie, who she regularly visits at Windsor Castle.
A former courtier remarked: “The Queen is very fond of her family and loves being around them, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they grow a little older.”
