The Magpies are looking to do plenty of business in their first summer since the Saudi-backed PIF takeover that made them the richest club in the world last season.
Eddie Howe invested January wisely, bringing in the likes of Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes to help the club climb from bottom to an impressive 11th place and the England manager will look to build on that next season.
The club have already confirmed the permanent transfer of Matt Targett from Aston Villa after his first loan and, according to The Telegraph, his second summer signing is just around the corner.
19-year-old Ekitike’s move to St James Park is almost complete after Newcastle agreed a deal with Reims for the Frenchman, who scored 11 goals in 26 games last season.
The deal appeared to falter in early June after the player picked up an injury but it is not said to be too serious and Newcastle are set to announce the transfer, which will initially cost £12m but could rise to £30m thereafter Add-ons later this week once brokerage fees and other minor details are sorted out.
But it’s not all good news for Magpies supporters as the much-anticipated transfer looks increasingly unlikely for Botman.
The Lille centre-back, who played a crucial role in the club’s title triumph in 2021, was on the verge of a move to Newcastle in January but the deal didn’t cross the line despite the Premier League side remaining interested in the 22-year-old has -old.
It was assumed that a bid of 30 million
While this decision may not represent a major change in the grand scheme of things, this decision has upset the Newcastle hierarchy and they have now told Lille they will back out of the deal if their opening offer is not accepted.
As a very highly rated young defender, missing out on Botman would be a missed opportunity but Newcastle are not short of other options this summer.
Other centre-backs the club have been linked with include Manchester City’s Nathan Ake and Arsenal’s William Saliba.
