A New York City cab driver has been killed after being brutally beaten by multiple attackers who tried to rob him.
Kutin Gyimah, 52, died after a group of five teenagers and young adults attacked him at a playground in the Rockaways early Saturday morning.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) identified Gyimah as the minivan driver of a yellow cab. He reportedly dropped the five attackers near the park as they tried to rob him.
Surveillance footage shows Gyimah catching up with the group outside near the playground after the attempted robbery. Gyimah confronts the group, who turn around and start beating him up.
Five attackers can be seen in the video beating Gyimah – two boys in their early 20s and three teenage girls, police said.
Police named one suspect, Austin Amos, 20, who they believe killed Gyimah by throwing him to the ground.
In the video, Amos appears to deliver a punch to Gyimah, knocking him off his feet. Then the back of his head hits the ground.
The fatal fight occurred around 6.20am near Arverne Playground.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found Gyimah lying on the ground with head trauma. He was taken to St. Johns Hospital in Far Rockaway by paramedics, where he was pronounced dead.
Gyimah has been identified as a father of four who resided in the Bronx. Gyimah’s children are 8, 7, 5 and 3 years old.
A GoFundMe was set up to pay for Gyimah’s funeral expenses and support the living and education costs of his four children.
“During the worst days of the pandemic, he was one of the few who still continuously drove a taxi to support our city and its citizens,” the organizers wrote.
The fundraiser had received nearly $135,000 in donations as of Thursday afternoon.
