New surveillance footage released of accident that killed 2-year-old in South Boston – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) — Jurors got their first look at new surveillance footage of the moments leading up to the chain reaction crash that killed 2-year-old Colin McGrath.

Colin’s nanny, who was observing the boy and his 4-year-old sister at the time of the crash, took the witness stand and contextualized the footage for the jury considering the charges against Charlene Casey. Casey allegedly caused a chain reaction accident in July 2018 when she ran a stop sign and hit a van, which was pushed into the children and nanny, who were on the sidewalk at the time.

The nanny, in tearful testimony, told jurors that she had just taken the children to Dunkin’ where she bought them food and drinks. They walked the South Boston sidewalk while the nanny pushed Colin’s stroller and his sister walked close behind them.

In the surveillance footage, the group is seen walking as customers at the nearby store rush to the window to see what happened. The nanny said she saw the van catapult towards her after hitting the other car before landing on the stroller and Colin. She said she yelled at the driver to back up.

The footage also showed a different angle of the accident, showing a white car and a van colliding at an intersection. Prosecutors said Casey, the driver of the white car, caused the accident when she failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the van hitting the group.

Colin was later pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center. His sister suffered broken bones, a ruptured liver, and other injuries. The nanny was not seriously hurt.

Seven witnesses, all in law enforcement, also testified. Casey has pleaded not guilty.

The jury will return Tuesday if they want to visit the intersection where the accident happened.
