“So this measure would do a few things to expand access to the ballot box, to protect and expand access for our Indigenous and rural voters across the state as well. like continuing to modernize and improve our elections so they can be safer,” said Toulouse Oliver.

The bill would make a number of changes including extending early voting to the Sunday before election day, creating permanent absentee lists, automatically registering people to vote by transaction at MVD, Allows electronic signatures to nominate petitions and generate a party ballot option.

It will also allow 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in local elections, such as school board elections.

Toulouse Oliver said: “As students, they are directly affected by the decisions that school boards make and so this bill will reflect and recognize their ability to put some language into practice. speak in the decisions the school board makes to influence them.

Toulouse Oliver said it felt right to announce the bill on Thursday, on the one-year anniversary of the riots in the capital.

“Unfortunately as a result of what happened in the 2020 election and on January 6, 2021, we have really seen a failure across the country and a lot of restrictive legislation. passed to make it harder for people to vote, punish election officials and what we’re trying to say is there’s another direction we can go. Here in New Mexico, we’re together. leadership in voting rights and voting access and security,” said Toulouse Oliver.

Lawmakers will decide whether to pass the proposed bill.

Toulouse Oliver said it has received support from Democratic leadership in both the House and Senate.
