New Mars images reveal a spooky crater that looks like a ‘human eye’ on the red planet

NEW images captured by a spacecraft orbiting Mars are delighting space fans.
A camera on the European Space Agency’s Mars Express spacecraft took snapshots of a large crater on the red planet.

The unnamed crater is said to be about 18.6 miles in diameter.
It’s attracted attention because of its unusual makeup that makes it look like a creepy human eye.
Space enthusiasts have taken to Twitter to point out the “disciple” of Mars.
A space lover tweeted: “Mars sleeps with one eye open! Scarred by Mars standards and colorful, this landscape shows part of Aonia Terra, a highland region in the southern highlands of Mars.”

Other Twitter users liken the “Eye of Mars” to a similar geological feature on Earth called the “Eye of the Sahara.”
The crater is located in the southern hemisphere of the red planet.
It is surrounded by other larger and arguably more impressive craters.
The craters are believed to have formed billions of years ago due to a mass attack of space rock impacts.
Scientists like to study this region of Martian craters because impacts deep in the planet’s interior can reveal material that may not be apparent elsewhere.
The darker material in the eye-like crater is thought to be a substance that was not eroded when Martian water was present in the hole.

Closer observations are needed to determine what exactly it is.
Scientists continue to study the geology of Mars to see if ancient life may have existed on the planet.
