Manchester United were forced to hold a special shirt promotion amid ongoing speculation about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future.

The club icon is set to leave Old Trafford this summer, less than 12 months after his emotional homecoming, frustrated by United’s lack of transfer activity and unwilling to be demoted to the Europa League next season.

United launched their new home kit on Friday morning and although Ronaldo was featured on the adidas shirt, according to The Athletic, the club chose not to release footage they shot with Ronaldo and other club legends and famous No7s earlier this year have David Beckham and Eric Cantona.

Ronaldo fears he will be stranded against his will at Manchester United as the Premier League giants are adamant he is not for sale at any price.

The 37-year-old will not be on the plane to Thailand for the start of the club’s pre-season tour as the star has been granted extra time off to attend to a family issue.

It emerged over the weekend that Ronaldo had asked to leave Old Trafford if an acceptable offer was received after a disappointing first season at a club where he won numerous medals between 2003 and 2009.

Ronaldo was conspicuous by his absence on Monday when new manager Erik ten Hag welcomed United’s international players to Carrington for the start of pre-season training.

The forward told the club he was dealing with a family matter and remained absent on Thursday as United confirmed he had been given extra time to deal with the issue.

As a result, Ronaldo will not be part of the group flying to Bangkok on Friday and there is no timeframe for when the striker will join forces with United, who face Liverpool in Thailand on Tuesday before flying to Australia.

Despite not boarding the flight to Bangkok, United insist Ronaldo will be part of the squad this season, much to the Portuguese superstar’s concern, the Daily Mail reports.

After the club have repeatedly said he is not for sale in recent weeks, their stance remains unchanged despite reports that they are indeed ready to sell the Portugal international.

There appear to be landing spots for the highly paid former Real Madrid forward and it’s understood Chelsea are still weighing his interest.
