FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Denise Tugby considers herself young for 65 years.
“You can be vibrant and healthy and active at any age just by staying active and taking care of yourself,” she said.
That’s the philosophy behind the new Age Well Center at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.
“We try to ensure that they maintain their physical and mental health. We want them to have fun growing old. If you don’t have a partner in your life, or if you have one and they’re not interested, you come here and it’s almost like family,” said Dr. Jennifer Capezzuti.
In one place, patients can see their GPs, undergo imaging and testing, and have free access to a variety of personal care services.
“We really tried to have everything to give things a big feel and not have it in separate pieces. You don’t have to go to a lab to have your blood tests done, you can do it right here. I did a couple of pre-ops this morning so they can X-ray her chest, her blood work her EKG so nothing falls through the cracks,” Capezutti said.
Beyond medical needs, there are social activities every day of the week.
“Like zumba and yoga and balance classes,” Tugby said.
She said membership in the aged health center has provided peace of mind through the combination of personal attention and health care.
“I’ve always been scared of doctors and hospitals, you’re talking to a very scared person, and I’m not scared here,” Tugby said.
The Age Well Center is part of a growing trend toward integrated care and is covered by multiple Medicare programs.
