Netflix is building its own game studio in Finland

what just happened Netflix announced earlier this year that it would double the size of its games library by the end of the year, and now we have a better idea of how they might achieve that goal. On Monday, Netflix announced that it will launch a new games studio in Helsinki, Finland. The studio is being built from the ground up alongside Next Games, the games maker that Netflix bought for $72 million earlier this year.

Netflix also acquired Night School Studio in September 2021 and Boss Fight Entertainment last March, and will soon have four gaming studios under its wing.

Launched in 2014, Night School Studio is best known for Oxenfree, a graphical adventure game released in early 2016. Founded in 2013 by Bill Jackson, David Rippy and Scott Winsett, Boss Fight Entertainment has released two games to date.

Next Games was the largest acquisition. Founded in 2013, the company is best known for its game series based on AMC’s The Walking Dead. At the end of last year, the company had 120 employees and a year earlier had generated more than $30 million in sales. Next Games is also based in Finland, which Netflix says is home to some of the best gaming talent in the world.

The new studio will be led by Marko Lastikka, who previously served as GM and executive producer for Electronic Arts before joining Zynga in January 2017 as VP and GM. Netflix said it’s another step in its vision to build a world-class games studio to create delightful and immersive games with no ads and no in-app purchases.

Netflix continues to make it clear that the new division is still in its infancy and that a game can take years to develop. So it’s probably not too much of a concern that user engagement for Netflix games is low. Ultimately, Netflix needs to turn the corner if it wants to keep the effort alive.
