The toll was 16% higher than in 2020.
Nearly 107,000 Americans died from drug overdoses last year, according to final numbers released Thursday.
The official number was 106,699, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. That’s nearly 16% more than the nearly 92,000 overdose deaths in 2020.
Earlier preliminary data suggests that there were more than 107,000 overdose deaths in the past year. The numbers may have changed as some additional death certificates were received, a CDC spokesman said. Also, the preliminary data includes all overdose deaths, while the final figures are limited to US citizens, he noted.
The CDC also released a final report on Thursday for the total number of U.S. deaths in 2021. As previously reported, more than 3.4 million Americans died this year, or more than 80,000 than the year before. Accidental injuries – which include drug overdoses – were the fourth leading cause of death after heart disease, cancer and COVID-19. Life expectancy dropped to about 76 years, 5 months.
