Naomi Osaka has suggested she could skip Wimbledon this summer as no ranking points are offered at the Grand Slam.

In response to the All England Club’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players due to the war in Ukraine, the ATP and WTA both recently announced the elimination of ranking points at this year’s Wimbledon.

While there will still be the prestige of playing in tennis’ oldest championship, the inability to climb the rankings on a strong showing will make the event an exhibition in the opinion of many players.

After her first-round loss to Amanda Anisimova at the French Open, Osaka said: “I’m not sure why, but I feel like when I play Wimbledon without points, it’s more of an exhibition.

“I know that’s not true, right? But my brain feels the same way. Whenever I think something is like an exhibition, I just can’t do it 100%.

“I haven’t even made my decision yet but I’m more inclined not to play given the current circumstances but that could change.”

When Wimbledon confirmed earlier this year that they would decline the participation of Russian and Belarusian players, the decision sparked controversy in the tennis world.

Grand Slam champions Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal lashed out at the move, urging SW19 bosses to change their minds.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian players like world No. 33 Elina Svitolina praised the All England Club for its approach.

However, without earning ranking points, she says, it would be difficult for her to compete at a high level.

She added: “I’d love to go just to get some experience on the grass court but at the same time for me it’s something like – I don’t want to say it’s pointless, no pun intended.

“But I’m the kind of player who gets motivated when he sees my ranking go up or likes stuff like that. So I think the intention was really good, but the execution is kind of everywhere.’
