A FRUSTRATED woman has shared how she was “speechless” when her neighbor asked her to pay for her tree to be cut down.
The anonymous woman vented her frustration on Mumsnet, where she explained that her neighbor has a tree on her property that shades her garden in the summer.
“I mentioned 3 years ago that it would be great if they could trim the height,” she wrote.
“They turned it down at the time as they had just started their own business and couldn’t afford it. I accepted that and felt bad afterward.”
She went on to explain how she protested last summer but was met with various excuses – including that the tree was both a noise barrier and a safety measure.
“I met with them this week to have them tell me (in a very awkward way) that they’ve finally found someone to come and trim all of their hedges (that this tree grows out of) and that the guy on the quote would tree,” she continued.
“I was very pleased but they then went on to say that they would let me know his offer to grade the tree and that with their permission he should quote that it be trimmed to a (very specific) height and that he should do it do not trample/flatten the surrounding bushes.”
“I was speechless! They want me to pay to cut down their tree with very specific requirements!”

The woman concluded, “SURE I can expect my neighbor to be…sensible and neighborly and tend a fairly large tree!? He’s only going to get bigger!”
It wasn’t long before the comments section was flooded with messages — with plenty of arguments you is in the wrong and that her neighbor is behaving completely “reasonably”.
“If the neighbor doesn’t take care of the tree, why should he pay to have it cut down?” asked one.
A second agreed: “Maybe it’s not a problem for her. Depends on how much you would like it trimmed, how much you would be willing to spend some money on it.
A third suggested: “Well, in such circumstances, perhaps going halfway would be the ideal option.
When our neighbors asked if we could drastically cut the top of one of our trees, they offered to pay in full. Since we wouldn’t have done any work on it otherwise, I think that’s pretty fair.”
Meanwhile, another added: “If you want the tree cut, you pay. They don’t gain anything from cutting the tree, they’re just being neighborly by allowing you to do it.”
Another remarked: “You’re the one demanding they cut down the tree. If you want it done, you should pay.”
“Sounds like they only agreed because you pursued them in the first place.”
