My lip filler dissolved and things went so badly that people compared me to Donald Duck – I even ended up in the hospital

A WOMAN who ended up in the hospital after her lip filler dissolved in a botched beauty disaster has opened up about how people compared her to Donald Duck.

Ruby, 23, from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, wanted to have her fillers dissolved after realizing they had migrated, which is what happens when the material moves from its injection site to another part of the lip.

Unfortunately, the procedure didn’t go as planned as Ruby’s lips became so swollen that her face was unrecognizable.

Seconds after a nurse administered the disintegrant, her lips began to grow – and minutes later, Ruby was rushed to the hospital.

“I told the clinic I wanted more shape and definition, but was told that if I wanted that I would have to have the lips dissolved and start over as they were too full,” she explained.

“I had a lot of dermal filler put on my lips for over two years and my lips had lost their shape and the filler was migrating.

“Seconds after the injection I started to swell, but the nurse continued and just said that a little swelling seemed normal.

“It wasn’t until she finished dissolving them that my lips started to get bigger and bigger to the point where she was concerned.

“She then took me to the car with a mask over my face and told my mother, who was waiting for me, that she had to take me to the hospital immediately.

“It was awful.

“Even though it wasn’t really painful, the pressure from the swelling was extreme and my lips felt like they were about to burst.

“I was just afraid that I would be permanently disfigured and the swelling would never go down.”

Afterwards, Ruby shared her experience with another medical staff member and was informed that the nurse should have administered adrenaline.

Panic set in as the extreme swelling spread to Ruby’s jaw, cheeks and nose.

“My mother drove me to the nearest hospital in a mad panic,” she said. “We’re not from the area so I had to guide them from Google Maps which only added to the stress and worry.

“As soon as we got there, I ran right past the front desk while my mom checked me in.

“I went straight to the main ward where I was treated immediately for the extreme swelling of my face.”

In the hospital, Ruby was put on steroids and antihistamines, but was told she was “very lucky” – because the ending could have been a lot worse.

She explained: “They said how lucky I was that I didn’t go into anaphylactic shock and that the first reactions are usually a warning, so future ones tend to be a lot worse.”

Ruby was in the hospital for about six hours before being discharged, but the swelling on her face took about two weeks to go down.

“Fortunately, this happened during the period when masks were mandatory in most places, so I was able to cover myself with one everywhere,” she said.

However, after her horrific experience, Ruby doubts she will ever get lip fillers again.

“I miss the shape and volume of my lips so I’d love to have them done again but it’s just not worth the risk,” she admitted. “However, I’m looking for other, less risky ways, like doing it with a cannula instead of a needle.

“But for now, I’m staying away from dermal fillers.”

The incident happened on December 5, 2020, but Ruby recently shared her experience online to help others – after going viral on TikTok.

In the video, she shares a series of photos of herself in the car with her mother on the way to the hospital.

She then shares more pictures of herself in the hospital, showing off each side of her face and lips.

The video has garnered over 2.6 million views, 86,600 likes and many comments from shocked viewers.

One person quipped: “Donald Duck Whooo?”

Another user wrote: “This is so bad! Didn’t they test you with the dissolver! Hope you feel better soon.”

While another commented, “Omg I hope you’re alright that’s why I’m so scared of ever getting my lips done!”

‘KRIS JENNER??’ wrote another viewer.

“You remind me of a cartoon character!” someone else joked.

Ruby wasn’t expecting her TikTok video to go viral, but is happy it will help raise awareness about the dangers of lip fillers – warning others to be careful.

“I had 0 followers and was following 0 people at the time, so I didn’t expect anyone to even see it,” she said.

“But I would just tell anyone looking to have their filler dissolved to go to a highly qualified and trusted doctor, preferably with a medical background, and make sure a patch test is done beforehand.

“I’ve loved my lips and previous clinics I’ve been to have been over the moon with them, it’s just that I went to this particular place for more definition and the nurse recommended dissolving them. So of course I listened.

“But if redness or lumps appear, don’t let them clear up, it’s not worth it.”
