“My heart is not full of anger or revenge”

GLADEVIEW, Fla. – Arianna McNear said Tuesday the pain of the loss feels overwhelming. The grieving mother also said she feels deep sadness when she thinks of the teenager who is accused of killing him.

Her son Cairi “Cai” McNear and Tavares Williams, 15, were fighting, police said. They were in the yard of a government-funded rental community in Miami-Dade County’s Gladeview district on May 4.

Detectives said Tavares pulled out a gun and shot McNear’s 17-year-old son before fleeing on a minibike. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced him dead at 14 Pl. 7126 NW.

“My cairi was my heartbeat.”

Officials arrested Tavares Monday in Broward County. The teenager appeared in court virtually Tuesday to face second-degree murder charges. Prosecutors said they wanted to charge him as an adult.

Cairi’s mother also said she wants to meet Tavares if his family allows it.

“My heart is not filled with anger or revenge. My heart is filled with compassion for him too.”

Correctional officers are detaining Tavares at the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Evaluation Center. Detectives said Tavares confessed to the shooting.

Investigators had not released any information about Tavares’ motive as of Tuesday afternoon. One of Cairi’s siblings set up a GoFundMe page and described him as a protector of the family.

“He was very talented at making people laugh. He was a prankster. He always kept a smile on everyone’s face and was the one to bring light into your day if you were ever sad or upset. Cairi had a passion for motorcycles and football. He also loved rapping fun music.”
