In an episode of “No Chill with Gilbert Arenas”, Gil discussed his initial anxieties when facing Vince Carter in his first match.
Gilbert Arenas is one of the most underrated players in NBA history. He was selected 31st by the Warriors in the 2001 draft. He earned the title of “Most Improved Player” during the 2002-03 season. In addition, Arenas had 3 All Star appearances and finished his career with more than 11,000 points.
On an episode of his podcast, Jaden Hardy asked him – “How did you prepare yourself, when you got there?” Gilbert Arenas had a very straightforward answer for the youngster – “I wouldn’t even lie bruised. My first match, we played Vince Carter. I was in there complacent. He shot like two straight shots, so I knew he was trash. ”
Furthermore, Arenas revealed that trash talk didn’t work for Carter and said, “Then he got mad, and started post-recording and tricking it, BOOM. I was on the pitch like – you see that. Then I had to realize I was in the NBA – Oh, that sucks. It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen.”
Gilbert Arenas overestimated his own abilities, comparing his athletic abilities to those of Carter and Richardson.
After the trick, Arenas became apprehensive about his own abilities as a player. He said, “But in the end what happened was, reality started and I like – he did it with Jason Richardson and I can’t even play in this tournament.”
He added – “I was very depressed when I realized that I did not have this athletic talent. So maybe I spent the first part of the season thinking – I can’t do this. ”
Arenas finally found his stride when he was advised to focus on his strengths. He say, “I did it to myself, and then someone said, why do you keep looking at them for what you can’t do? You have speed, you can shoot, you can score. Now, let’s look at the game like that. Can those players stop what you do? So then I had to refocus the stars and start going to both. ”
Gilbert Arenas has played for several franchises. After many years with the Warriors, Arenas brought his talents to the Wizards, Magic and Grizzlies. He decided to call it a break in 2013 after playing with the Shanghai Sharks for a season.
