Watch Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 1 Premiere Generation Why
Kamala Khan is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American growing up in Jersey City. A great student, avid gamer, and voracious fanfiction writer, she has a special affinity for superheroes, especially Captain Marvel. But Kamala struggles to adjust at home and at school — that is, until she gains superpowers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life is easier with superpowers, right?
Warning… spoilers below!
On Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 1 Premiere, teenager Kamala Khan shares her latest video in a 10-part video series about her favorite superhero, Captain Marvel. She wants to go to Avengercon in New Jersey this week and enter the Captain Marvel Cosplay Contest.
Today Kamala is supposed to take her driving test. During the exam, she reverses into another parked car that happens to belong to the driving instructors. On her way home from her failed exam, Kamala’s mother complains and feels guilty for spending so much time fantasizing.
Kamala goes to Coles Academic High School, where the teachers keep getting her name wrong, and she’s clearly not cool. Her best friend Bruno is worried that they can’t go to Avengercon now since she doesn’t have her license.
Kamala briefly considers asking cool and slightly mean girl Zoe who she was friends with before Zoe became famous on the internet and had 80,000 followers. Before they can come up with a plan, Mr. Wilson, the hip careers counselor, requests to see Kamala in his office.
The future is now
Mr. Wilson obviously tries hard to be relaxed and relatable, talking to Kamala about her grades and her teachers complaining about her fantasizing and doodling in class. Since she is in her junior year, Mr. Wilson claims that she needs to start making a plan for her future now, not later.
While Mr. Wilson talks to her about how to look to her future, Kamala backs out of their conversation. Regaining her attention, he asks her to look in the mirror at home and wonder who she is, reciting lyrics from Mulan. Mr. Wilson sees Kamala divided, half in her fantasy land, half in reality.
Kamala is devastated that they cannot go to the very first Avengercon without their license. Bruno suggests that she ask her parents for help, but Kamala and her mother are at odds about the things she loves, her responsibilities, and that Kamala lives in her own world.
As she prepares to question her parents, Kamala goes through a box of things her grandmother sent, but her mother claims it’s all junk, including an antique and powerful-looking bangle. She is then hired to help with errands for her brother’s upcoming wedding.
While Kamala helps her mother, Bruno uses his ZuZu-Tech system to make her house a smart home, which impresses her father. When she gets home, Bruno urges her to ask her parents about Avengercon, although Kamala is sure her mother will say no.
When she tries to broach the subject, her mother claims she doesn’t trust Kamala, reminding her that she is not allowed to go to parties at night or dress skimpy like other girls. Angry at their lack of trust, Kamala storms into her room, but her brother Aamir promises to speak to them on her behalf.
The next morning, Kamala tries on her Captain Marvel cosplay outfit, but quickly hides it under a robe when her mother knocks. After speaking with her brother, Kamala’s mother agrees to let her go to Congress, but only if she goes with her father disguised as the Hulk.
Kamala is humiliated and hurts her parents by expressing how embarrassed she would be to attend the convention in her mother’s outfit with her father. Her father is particularly hurt by her words and rescinds his offer to take her in.
The game plan
After the argument with her parents, Kamala meets Bruno on the roof of his building. She wonders if her mother is right about spending too much time in fantasy land, noting that it’s usually not the brown girls from Jersey City who end up saving the world.
Bruno believes in her, and as they almost share a romantic moment, he shows her a prototype of glow-in-the-dark gloves to use on her Captain Marvel costume. A few days later at school, Kamala has an idea.
She is able to sneak out of her house to Avengercon with Bruno while he uses his ZuZu tech system to convince her parents that she is still home. She will win the cosplay competition and sneak back into her house before her father checks on her at night.
That evening, Kamala is at home looking for one last piece to complete her costume. She wants something Pakistani and goes to the attic to check. There she finds the ancient looking cuff her grandmother sent her and takes it with her.
The next day is Avengercon. Kamala’s plan immediately begins to fail, but she and Bruno manage to catch the last bus to the event after Kamala loses her bike. At the event, Captain America’s theme song is played and Kamala and Bruno are surrounded by other Avenger fans. The convention includes a wall for tributes to Black Widow and Iron Man.
When it’s time for the Captain Marvel Cosplay Contest, Kamala gets distracted by cool girl Zoe, who shows up in a skimpy Captain Marvel costume. Kamala barely manages to put the bangle on before she takes to the stage, and when she does, power radiates through her arm and into her body before briefly falling into another plane and returning.
Overwhelmed by the camera flashes on stage, Kamala throws the arm with the bracelet forward and begins inadvertently shooting beams of crystal-like power throughout the convention. While Kamala and Bruno are scared, the crowd loves Kamala, even cool girl Zoe.
Unfortunately, Kamala’s energy beam struck a giant replica of Ant Man’s head, causing it to roll around on the convention floor and causing extensive damage. In the excitement, a giant version of Thor’s hammer is unleashed and slams straight into Zoe, who saves Kamala with another blast of power.
Outside of Congress, Bruno panics while riding a confused Kamala home on her bike. He promises not to tell anyone about her potential powers, and Kamala sneaks back to her room where her mother is waiting for her.
Her mother is incredibly disappointed and tries to explain to Kamala that she is only trying to protect her from herself. She asks Kamala if she wants to be as good as she grew up or some kind of cosmic “head in the clouds” persona.
Kamala lays back on her bed to think about it and for the first time begins to check out her new powers, which she believes to be cosmic. In a deleted scene in an office building, two adults watch video of Kamala at Avengercon and decide to bring her in.
Honorable Mention/Easter Egg: Scott Lang apparently has a podcast called Big Me, Little Me that Kamala Khan is a fan of. How cool is that?
