A scolding gun has been set up for angry motorists who are at the end of their strength on a potholed road.

Nearly 700 people in the village of Wrenbury, near Nantwich in Cheshire, have signed a petition calling on the council to repair the badly damaged Station Road.

Councilor Oliver Lowe said in the petition: “Last year the road was due for repairs but funds have been reprioritized for another (unknown) job.

“As such, the road deteriorated significantly. The council has since said it will be repaired this fiscal year, but it must be done as soon as possible, certainly before another winter.

“The villagers also fear that funding will be reallocated elsewhere.

“The council is currently making some temporary repairs to the worst potholes that are forming, but these are only temporary measures.”

They claim the infamous road – on which the local elementary school is located and one of the main roads in and out of the village – is one of the worst in the country.

When local reporters visited the street earlier this week, they found that a satirical swear box had been set up by the roadside to raise funds for repairs to Cheshire’s East Council.

Resident Mary White responded to the petition: “This is the worst road I’ve ever driven on! Piles of asphalt is not a road repair!’

Meanwhile, Christine Grove added: “This road has been in appalling condition for years and is dangerous. It is also on the route of the Cheshire Cycleway – a major tourist attraction.’

A spokesman for Cheshire East Council said: “We are constantly working to keep our roads in good condition in very difficult financial circumstances.

“The council has a £180million backlog of work to be carried out due to cuts in government funding for road maintenance over the past decade.

“Any work on the freeways and footpaths must be prioritized according to available budgets across the county, and we place the highest priority on the safety of our road users.”
