moon knight didn’t take Marc Spector’s character and mythology so faithfully from the comics, but threw it all in a blender. All the recognizable elements were there for comic book readers, they were just used differently. Such as Mr. Knight, for example, who was not reinterpreted as an independent personality but as a superhero form by Steven Grant.
And with that change in storytelling came a change in his costume. While the white face mask and fancy suit were lifted straight off the page, the MCU’s Mr. Knight came out with a jagged, stitched teardrop running down the center of his face. It’s a nifty update to the look that really makes it pop on screen.
It turns out we owe his innovation to none other than Marvel President Kevin Feige himself. moon knight‘s costume designer Meghan Kasperlik was asked by TheDirect.com about the origins of Mr. Knight’s facial tear and she replied:
“That’s all [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feig. Kevin picked that and I think it just made such an impression. It was pretty cool and everyone seems to love it. But that was all Kevin.”
This is a good example of how handy figs are as a producer. Not only does he run Marvel Studios at the macro level, he’s also involved in the smallest of details, like a relatively minor costume change. Luckily for Marvel’s film and TV show makers, Cowardly’s micromanagement doesn’t extend to imposing their creative freedom as the people behind it moon knight have raved about how they were able to set the series apart from the broader MCU.
Now we just have to weigh Feige whether moon knight gets a second season or not, after that shocking (although we kinda saw it coming) post-credits scene in the finale. All six episodes are available to stream now on Disney Plus.
