Montreal’s Muslim community celebrates Ramadan without restrictions – Montreal

In the coming month, Muslims will fast from sunrise to sunset, breaking their fast with a meal together. You will also pray several times a day.

But over the past two years, it has been difficult to make it together as a community.

“For most of us, the last two years have basically become normal,” says Iman Raza Shah. “We’re used to walking into a building, social distancing and restrictions, so this is the first year we haven’t had any of that.”

There was still a curfew in Quebec last year, which made it difficult for many Muslims to pray in the mosque.

“We had some of our prayers after 8pm and some of our prayers before 5am as well, so we had to cut our prayers because of the curfew last year,” Shah says.

Although Ramadan is also a time of individual reflection, for Ali Raza, a member of Center Islamique Ahmadiyya, being able to pray with his community means a lot.

“Last year we ate at home, we pray at home,” he says. “Now we are happy to be all together gathering in a mosque. We are much happier.”

According to Shah, there are still many precautions to be taken. Everyone must be double vaccinated to visit the mosque.

“We are very satisfied and we are definitely taking advantage of the situation, but at the same time we remain cautious,” he says.

“People are encouraged to come to the mosque, but nobody is forced,” says Shah. “So if you want to pray at home or would rather pray at home, you are of course welcome and can pray at home.”

Ramadan lasts 30 days and ends on May 1st.
