At least six people have died after a massive dust storm triggered a 21-car pile-up in the United States.

High winds over Montana kicked up dust and left many riders with “zero visibility.”

At the time of the crash, gusts of 60 miles per hour were being recorded on the Interstate 90 freeway near Hardin.

The crash was reported at 4:28 p.m. local time on Friday.

Minutes after the crash, nearby Big Horn Country Airport recorded winds of up to 60 mph, up from 25 mph less than fifteen minutes earlier.

A highway patrol officer said additional emergency services had to be called from another city to help as it is not yet clear how many people were injured.

While rescue workers were on site on Friday, cars could be seen crashing into the grassy embankment.

Dozens of other vehicles were back on the road because of the accident.

The dust storm was caused by a mix of recent dry temperatures and strong winds.

“It looks like there were strong winds that caused a dust storm with no visibility,” said Jay Nelson of the Montana Highway Patrol.

Visibility is said to have dropped to less than 400 meters due to the poor weather conditions on Friday.

Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte said he was “deeply saddened” by the news of the “mass casualty accident.”

“Please join me in prayer to lift up the victims and their families. We are grateful to our first responders for their service,” he added.
