President Joe Biden said Monday that a monkeypox outbreak is not as risky as the coronavirus pandemic, countering comments he made a day earlier that “everyone should be concerned” about the outbreak.

During a visit to Tokyo, the president said the smallpox vaccine was effective for monkeypox and that the US had enough to counter the growing outbreak should it worsen.

“We have had this monkeypox in large numbers in the past. We have vaccines to take care of that,” he said.

“I just don’t think it reaches the level of concern that has existed with Covid-19,” he added.

Though he felt monkeypox wasn’t as much of a threat as the coronavirus, he still warned Americans to be cautious.

On Monday, health officials said they may have found a third case of the virus in the United States in a patient in South Florida.

The first case of monkeypox in the United States was reported in Massachusetts on Wednesday. The second was found in New York City on Friday.

Monkeypox, which is similar to smallpox but milder, is spread through close person-to-person contact. At least 85 cases of the virus have been reported across Europe, although the virus is mainly found in West and Central Africa.

Although no monkeypox-related deaths have been reported, health officials around the world are trying to learn more about the causes of the outbreak. The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday it would step up efforts to understand atypical outbreaks of the virus and work to combat it.

The WHO estimates that monkeypox has the potential to be fatal to up to one in ten people, although vaccines offer some protection against severe cases.

Symptoms of the virus appear one to two weeks after infection and include fever, headache, and skin rashes that start on the face and then spread to the rest of the body.
