Colorado police have released video of the horrifying moment when a train struck a police car parked on the tracks with a 20-year-old woman handcuffed in the back seat.

The woman, Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, suffered multiple fractures and a head injury when the train crashed into the squad car on September 16. According to video footage released by Platteville and Fort Lupton Police Departments, the freight train collided with the car as it sat over the railroad tracks.

Responding to a report of a street rage confrontation involving a gun, police stopped Rios-Gonzalez near a set of railroad tracks, leaving the police car right on the tracks.

Rios-Gonzalez was arrested on suspicion of the imminent crime and placed in the back seat of the squad car. As officers searched her car, the train sped down the tracks.

According to The Denver Post, it took officers at least 15 seconds to respond to the train’s honk to warn that it was heading toward the car.

Both body camera footage and dashboard camera footage capture the terrifying moment when officers appear to realize the train is heading straight for their squad car.

One of the officers is heard gasping as the train approaches before yelling at a colleague to “stay back”. An officer turns several times before taking cover as the train hits the car.

About 20 seconds later, an officer began repeatedly asking if Rios-Gonzalez was in the car, to which another responded, “Oh my god, yes she was.”

While she was unconscious when she arrived at the hospital following the accident, her attorney, Paul Wilkinson, said she remembered the accident.

Wilkinson said it was “incredible” that police would park their car on train tracks while someone was being held inside.

“She saw it coming and could hear the horn,” he told the Post. “She tried to get the police’s attention by yelling at them. She tried to unlock the door. She had her hands behind her back and was desperately trying to unlock the door.”

The Fort Lupton Police Department said in a statement that officers “vacated the suspect vehicle to determine if anyone else was inside the vehicle.”

“Within seconds, the Platteville police vehicle carrying the female detainee was struck by a northbound train. Fort Lupton officials immediately called medical attention and put life support on them.’

No one on the train was injured in the collision.

Rios-Gonzalez has not been charged in connection with the alleged road traffic incident and the accident remains under investigation.
