A Texas mother says she had to “play dead” to save her children after her ex-boyfriend brutally stabbed her eight times with a kitchen knife, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down.

Brittany Morris, a 31-year-old mother, was in an on-and-off relationship with her twin children’s father, Rondell Raman Malveaux, for three years.

After Morris called things off in August 2019, Morris said Malveaux showed up at her home in the middle of the night and stabbed her eight times with a kitchen knife, the Daily Mail reported.

When she was stabbed, Morris said she pretended to be dead so her ex would leave without harming their twin sons. The young mother suffered near-fatal wounds to her neck, back, hip and face.

She was stabbed four times in the neck, back, waist, side and face. She was completely paralyzed from the chest down.

After the attack, Malveaux ran off and stole all the phones from the house to prevent Morris from calling the police. He later returned to claim her car keys from her sister to allow for a quicker escape, according to Morris, who said she “played dead” the whole time.

“I saw his shadow trying to enter my bedroom window with the knife,” she told the Daily Mail. “He kicked the front door wide open. I took him outside and sat in the chair on the porch and he just yelled at me.

“He said, ‘So you’re done with me, is that it?’ and I said, “Yes,” and then he just started stabbing right in the back of my neck up to the spine, and I was instantly paralyzed,” she said.

After he left, Morris’s sister knocked on neighbors’ doors until someone could call an ambulance.

The attack came after he reportedly told Morris that he “didn’t want her to be with anyone else.”

Malveaux was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Jefferson County Court in Beaumont in March 2020.

Morris said he will face the possibility of parole in 10 years, leaving her concerned for her safety and that of her children. In the meantime, she works to provide for her children.

The mother is working towards passing her driving test to operate an adapted vehicle that has handles for the accelerator and brakes.

“For years, I’ve used my wheelchair to go everywhere — to school, to the grocery store, to take my kids to the park,” she said. “Not much is possible without means of transport, because you are dependent on people. I have to drive again.”

She added, “I could find work and do more therapy because I could transport myself. I wouldn’t have to rely on people driving my kids to school or doing things for me either.”
