Mom dead, baby boy still missing after family fishing trip in Amesbury – Boston News, weather, sports

AMESBURY, MASS. (WHDH) — An intensive search is underway along the Merrimack River for a missing 6-year-old boy, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Newburyport Fire Chief Christopher LeClaire said the family of six – a mother, a father and their four children – were likely fishing on Deer Isle when the fight began sometime around 7pm

Two of the children are believed to have entered the Merrimack River. The mother then followed her children into the water.

Five people were pulled from the river. Many neighbors joined the rescue effort after a pair of fishermen pulled a 7-year-old girl out of the water onto a nearby deck, the Coast Guard said. The mother could not heave herself on board and went under the water. Eventually rescue workers pulled her out of the water. Once in the dock, the neighbors said they started resuscitating the woman, but she didn’t make it. Your name is not published yet.

The 7-year-old was taken to hospital with hypothermia and is expected to be fine.

“We used to be boaters, the river is really tough and you have to respect it,” said a neighbor.

Divers will continue their search for the boy on Friday morning. The Chain Bridge linking Newburyport and Amesbury reopened Friday morning, but authorities warned boaters to be wary of the increasing presence of rescue workers on the water as the search for the boy continues.

Newburyport officials said the search is becoming increasingly likely to be a salvage mission over time, but an entire court press to find him continues.
