Arsenal contract rebel Mohamed Elneny has made it clear he wants to stay in the north London club this summer.

The 29-year-old Egyptian is out of contract at the end of the season and appeared set to leave the club, having made infrequent appearances for the Gunners for much of the current season.

However, an unexpected re-emergence has made Elneny a regular in the absence of Thomas Partey and manager Mikel Arteta is now reportedly looking to keep the midfielder in his squad for the next term.

Speaking to Sky Sports this week, Elneny expressed his affection for Arsenal but suggested he is waiting for the club to offer him an extension.

He said: “I’ve said before if Arsenal want me it’s my club, it’s my family but it’s not my decision. I have to wait until they say: “Mo, we want you”.

“It has felt like family since the first day I’ve been here. We really work like that here, it’s such a nice club.

When Elneny played in Arsenal’s 4-2 Premier League win against Chelsea last month, it was his first start of 2022.

He has since developed a strong partnership with Granit Xhaka in midfield and was on a four-game winning streak by the end of their run at Tottenham last Thursday.

Elneny has been at Arsenal for six years and has only played one season in the Champions League in that time.

A little over a month ago it would have been unthinkable that he could help the Gunners return to the top of the European table.

The north Londoners are currently fifth, two points behind rivals Tottenham but have a game against Newcastle United on Monday night.

Elneny added: “I’ve always believed in it. I do my job, I let Mikel do his job and I respect his decisions. He always does the right thing for the team, I believe in that.

“Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka played and did really well, there was never anything to explain, I understood. I just knew I had to be ready, we work as a team and in football everything can change in a second.

“When you suddenly play and the fans can see you, when you feel like you’re playing well, when you win, you feel that change. I’m really proud when I hear something good about myself and they see how hard I work for this club.”
