Mitch Lewis suffers a knee injury and misses the first round for the Hawthorn Hawks

Hawthorn’s key forward Mitch Lewis will miss at least round one after spraining an anterior cruciate ligament in an injury hit for the rebuilding club.

Hawthorn’s chief medical officer Liam West said that while Lewis sprained the same knee he injured in 2022, the two injuries were unrelated.

He said they remain hopeful Lewis does not need surgery but will continue to investigate the injury.

“He’s definitely going to spend some time on the sidelines and at this point we expect him to miss the first lap,” West said.

The Hawks are hoping the promising key forward can cement himself in their young lineup this season, and while the injury may be just a minor setback, it’s a reminder of how important the 24-year-old is to their recovery.

The Hawks have embarked on a massive rebuild under Sam Mitchell, with several veteran players including Jack Gunston, Jaeger O’Meara and Tom Mitchell traded in the offseason. While their defense looks solid, they have an inexperienced midfield and attacking line.

One of the club’s rising leaders, Lewis has had no luck with injuries in recent seasons, despite scoring 37 goals in just 15 games last season.
