Missouri Rep. wants legislation banning teens from buying semi-automatic guns

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — A Missouri lawmaker is pushing for legislation that would ban teens from buying semi-automatic firearms and weapons in the state.

Missouri State Assemblyman David Smith (D-Columbia) announced Friday via twitter that he intends to introduce such legislation before the next Missouri legislature.

Smith, who was elected representative for Missouri’s 45th District last year, did so sponsored several bills with ties to public safety and the judicial system this year. He tells FOX2 that this is the first time he’s introduced legislation addressing gun control in Missouri.

According to Smith, there is a growing need to restrict semi-automated purchases among teenagers. Within the last month, two teenagers have been charged in mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, resulting in a total of 29 deaths.

“I wanted to make sure I was proposing something that would have prevented that,” Smith said in a call to FOX2 on Tuesday. “I thought we had to get this under control.”

Smith is a member of the Missouri House Emerging Issues Committee, probably where legislation would be heard first. He won’t be able to table a bill until the next Missouri legislative session in January 2023.

Before that, Smith plans to speak with gun safety experts to get a better idea of some plans and wording that could be included in the bill. He hopes to start a draft later this summer.

“Everyone agrees they’ve had enough,” Smith said. “There must be some restrictions.”

Smith believes such legislation could garner support from both Democratic Republic and Republic legislatures. He received support from Missouri State Representatives Marlence Terry (D-St. Louis) and Bridget Moore (D-St. Louis County).

However, there is some opposition to Smith’s bill. Chuck Basye, Missouri State Representative says KMIZ that such legislation “might make it more difficult for a law-abiding citizen” to obtain a firearm. Smith says he was also surprised by some criticism of the legislation via Twitter.

At the national level, the US House of Representatives committee is planning to do so discuss legislation Thursday that could ban the sale of semi-automatic guns to anyone under the age of 21.
