Missouri man convicted of killing 3 people and injuring 2 people

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A man found guilty of murdering three people and injuring two others in Missouri in 2018 was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences on Friday.

Luis Perez, 27, was convicted after being found guilty of three counts of first-degree murder and two counts of assault in October, The Springfield News-Leaderreported.

Court documents state that on Nov. 1, 2018, Perez killed two former roommates, Steven Marler, 38, and Aaron “Joshua” Hampton, 23, and injured two others after he was thrown from their Springfield home.

The next day, Perez killed 21-year-old Sabrina Starr, who gave him the gun he used to kill the other victims, police said.

In the days following Perez’s indictment, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement criticized Middlesex County, New Jersey, for not holding Perez in jail in December 2017 when he was arrested there on suspicion of multiple crimes.

ICE said it asked that Perez be kept in jail while it began deportation proceedings against him. He came to the United States with his family when he was 18 months old and was in the country illegally.

Another person was convicted for providing Perez with the bullets he used. Two others have pending charges.
