Missouri AG threatens to sue cities that fund access to abortion services

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt is threatening to sue Missouri communities for using taxpayer money to help women access abortion services. St. Louis Mayor Tishaura O. Jones has called Schmitt’s recent threats “desperate.”

Plans to help women access abortion-related services in St. Louis City and County were proposed this week. They came after the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade on Friday and abortion became illegal in the state.

St. Louis County’s plan is to allocate $1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding to help women with child care and transportation. The county would provide funding through grants to community groups, which can then help customers. However, the money will not be used to directly fund or support abortion services, or to promote or advise on a procedure.

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt opposes the plan. He says Kansas City, St. Louis County and St. Louis City use taxpayers’ money to fund abortions.

“Using hard-earned taxpayer money, whether it be ARPA money or other revenue streams, to fund abortion is clearly illegal under Missouri law. St. Louis City and County, Kansas City and anyone else who attempts to authorize taxpayer-funded abortions will face a lawsuit from the Missouri Attorney’s Office,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt refers to Missouri law in its statement released today: “It is unlawful to spend public funds to perform or support an abortion that is not necessary to save the life of the mother, or for the purpose of encouraging or advising a woman to have an abortion, which is not necessary to save her life.”

St. Louis Mayor Tishaura O. Jones responded to Schmitt’s threat with this statement:

“The only thing Eric Schmitt loves more than wasting taxpayer dollars on his Senate campaign is attacking St. Louis families and our fundamental right to make our own private decisions about health care. Seven out of ten Missourians oppose political interference in access to abortion. Careless threats will not stop our fight to protect reproductive health care rights and support families in St. Louis at every stage of pregnancy.”

Jones calls the threats and lawsuits “desperate.” She says the effort is part of his campaign for the US Senate.

Schmitt tweeted a response to the statement: “The mayor of St. Louis is a shady individual trying to score political points at every turn while turning a blind eye to the incessant killings that plague the city. Unfortunately, her tenure has been tantamount to enforced masking, crime, police defunding, and now illegal taxpayer-funded abortions.”
