People across the country braved the threat of thunderstorms this afternoon to turn out for street parties, picnics and barbecues on the final day of the Platinum Jubilee.
The weather forecast didn’t exactly scream heat wave, many places were seeing showers or even storms.
But the rain held out enough to hold most of the 85,000 Big Jubilee Lunches, and millions expected to raise their flags and celebrate the Queen’s 70th year on the throne.
Prince Charles and Camilla led the way as they arrived for a grand anniversary luncheon at The Oval cricket ground in south London.
He cut a cake and chatted with attendees, including Sarah Friar, CEO of neighborhood app Nextdoor.
“He ended up saying how great it was that everyone was getting together this weekend,” she said.
She added that Charles commented: “When it comes to Monday, are we going to go back to all the bickering? Let’s hope we don’t.’
Ms Friar said it was “a wonderful thought” for all of us.
Gemma Snow of the Eden Project sat next to Charles for a few minutes over lunch and said he also spoke to her about “keeping this togetherness going”.
Many roads across the country were closed in preparation for the street festivals.
The entire length of Jermyn Street, near Piccadilly Circus in central London, is closed to traffic, with pop-up stalls and entertainers in place of cars.
A record-breaking ‘Long Lunch’ took place on the Long Walk just outside Windsor Castle.
Back at the Oval, Sonia Wilson, 43, mentioned the party at the palace to Prince Charles.
She said: “He said, ‘I’m sorry to keep you from your lunch’.” I said, “Don’t worry, I had my jam sandwich.”
Ms Wilson said Charles laughed and replied: “That’s a good joke, isn’t it?”
