Mikel Arteta has pushed his Arsenal board to make quick and aggressive £25m move for Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans
The Belgian has a year to complete his contract with the Foxes and is talking about a renewal that stalled last year as Tielemans intends to leave the club.
The 25-year-old is the Foxes’ record signing for £32million after joining from Monaco in 2018 and Brendan Rodgers is keen to keep the former Anderlecht skipper.
Liverpool and Manchester United have both shown interest in Tielemans in the past but those links have cooled, with Arsenal now leading the way for the midfielder’s signature.
Tielemans was open to a move to Arsenal but hoped the Gunners would finish in the top four as he had hoped to join a Champions League side.
Mohamed Elneny is expected to sign a new one-year extension following his strong performances in the closing stages of the season, but Arteta remains keen to strengthen his midfield.
Tieleman’s box-to-box style is attractive to Arteta, who feels he has solved two of the three midfield positions in Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard.
Arsenal could compete with rivals Tottenham for the Tielemans signature, with Antonio Conte a huge admirer of the midfielder.
