Mikael Silvestre says only five players out of the current The Manchester United squad deserve to be at the club next season.

Sixth-placed United are enduring one of their worst seasons in 30 years as they struggle to finish in the Premier League’s top four as their top stars underperform.

Following the Red Devils’ 4-0 defeat at Anfield, interim manager Ralf Rangnick revealed up to 10 new players could join Old Trafford as the club begins a makeover this summer.

However, Silvestre, who played in a red shirt for nine years, believes United should not rush their recruitment and believes there is a backbone new manager Erik ten Hag should seek to build his team.

He told Sky Sports: “Well first of all you can’t sign 10 players in one window, it doesn’t make sense. So it’s going to take two or three windows, and I’m talking summer windows, to really adjust the roster to reflect the new manager’s desires.

“And for those who need to stay safe, I’d say the backbone of the team. Bruno Fernandes has signed a new contract so he has to stay.

‘David de Gea, Raphael Varane we haven’t seen much of this season, Harry Maguire needs to improve. I think he’s a good leader, he’s having a difficult time at the moment but he has to stick with United and work hard to get back to his best.

“And I would say Marcus Rashford would have to stay too. I think these guys have United in their hearts but there are question marks for the rest of them all.

The lack of desire to keep the current squad together only underscores United’s recent failures in the transfer market.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, the club have spent £1bn on the likes of Angel Di Maria, Romelu Lukaku and Marouane Fellaini but will now go five years without a trophy.

Meanwhile, huge transfer investments could be needed again this summer as Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingaard and Edinson Cavani are all ready to leave the club when their contracts expire.

Following United’s defeat at Liverpool, former defender Gary Neville opened up about his old club’s transfer failures over the past decade.

He said: “On the recruitment side, United have brought in players with piano performances like (Alexis) Sanchez or (Paul) Pogba. They elevated the player above the football club manager.

“You go to Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City and the manager is the main figure in the football club.”
