A teenager who accidentally shot himself in the foot has been convicted of gun crimes.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was hospitalized shortly before midnight on March 11, 2022 with a gunshot wound.

He gave an “untrue” version of events, police said, about how he sustained the wound.

Witnesses and CCTV investigations later found he had accidentally fired a shotgun – hidden in his waistband – into his foot on Lionel Road North in Middlesex.

The investigation revealed that another teenager, 19-year-old Tyrese Campbell, was with the boy at the time of the incident and took the firearm.

The 17-year-old was sentenced to a 12-month referral order by Kingston Crown Court on Friday January 27.

He pleaded guilty in the same court on December 1, 2022 to possession of a firearm to incite fears of violence.

His co-defendant Campbell, 19, of Chrislea Close, Hounslow, was sentenced to 14 months in prison.

He had pleaded guilty to carrying a firearm in a public place in the same court on December 1, 2022.

Detective Constable Katie Newton, the investigating officer with the Met Police’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “The 17-year-old and Campbell were in illegal possession of the shotgun and they clearly had it with the sole intention of inciting fears of violence – or worse.

“We know that gun crime is closely linked to gangs, drug markets and organized crime groups and we will stop at nothing to disrupt the supply of firearms on the streets of London.

“But we can’t do it alone. We can reduce gun crime much faster if the public gives us information about where firearms are kept and who is using them.”

Anyone with information about firearms or other weapons should call the police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
