Michelle Mone takes leave from House of Lords amid PPE storm

Queen Elizabeth II is due to officially open Parliament two days later on Wednesday and announce the British government's legislative program as planned. The State Opening, a pompous ceremony at which the monarch reads the Queen's speech on the government program for the coming year, was due to take place on June 19 but was postponed after British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party lost its majority in the House of Commons in the June 8 elections. / AFP PHOTO / POOL / Stefan Rousseau (Photo credit should read STEFAN Rousseau/AFP via Getty Images)

Fellow Tory Michelle Mone is set to be furloughed by the House of Lords after reportedly collecting a whopping £29million from Covid-19 personal protective equipment (PPE) contracts.

Lady Mone reportedly recommended firm PPE Medpro for £203 million worth of contracts during the pandemic.

According to documents seen by the Guardiantens of millions of pounds of the manufacturer’s profits were stuffed into an offshore trust benefiting Mone and her children.

The former lingerie tycoon, who was peered by David Cameron in 2015, has previously denied any connection to the company.

Lady Mone’s spokesman said: “Baroness Mone will take immediate leave of absence from the House of Lords to clear her name of the allegations wrongly leveled against her.”

The leave means she cannot attend House meetings, vote on procedures, and claim an allowance.

Labor is now trying to force the Government to release records of contracts awarded to PPE Medpro.

Angela Rayner said companies like PPE Medpro had been recommended and “accelerated” and “favoured” by Tory ministers, MPs and colleagues during the pandemic.

The Labor Deputy Leader described the so-called VIP trail as “a scandal of epic proportions”.

She said the company had won a £122million order for clothes that “couldn’t be used” and that £700,000 a day of “taxpayers’ money” was now being wasted storing the unusable PPE.

The company has denied that the kit was faulty.

Ms Rayner added: “This looks very dodgy – people are making huge sums of money on PPE that couldn’t be used. It must now be uncovered. These documents have to come out and it has to be public.’
