Michael Vaughan has warned Australia that England will face them in next summer’s Ashes series after Ben Stokes’ side clinched a brilliant win over New Zealand.

England chased 299 in 50 overs on the final day of the second Test at Trent Bridge to beat New Zealand by five wickets and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game series.

It was another thrilling and impressive victory for Brendon McCullum’s side, who chased the series opener against World Test champions New Zealand 277 at Lord’s last week.

Vaughan believes England’s rapid progress under McCullum bodes well for the team as they look to establish themselves as one of the best Test sides in the world and reclaim the Ashes next summer.

“This will send a message to the cricket world that this England Test team is to be feared and that they will face Australia next summer,” Vaughan wrote in the Daily Telegraph.

“Shy England, afraid of failure, have vanished after just two friendlies in the new regime.

“This team is still in its infancy but after just eight days of Test cricket we know the combination of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes has broken the bonds.

“It’s more or less the same team, but they were freed and it completely changed their psychology.”

While England beat New Zealand at Lord’s, prospects of victory in Nottingham seemed bleak after conceding 553 goals in the first innings after opting to bowl first.

Daryl Mitchell’s brilliant 190 and a century by Tom Blundell helped New Zealand take control of the Test, but England almost reached par through hundreds from Joe Root and Ollie Pop.

New Zealand lost several cheap wickets in their third innings but fifties from Mitchell, Will Young and Devon Conway ensured England had to chase 299 in 72 overs, a difficult task.

Jonny Bairstow’s incredible century and fluid contributions from Stokes and Alex Lees saw England race to victory in what Stokes ranks over their Ashes and World Cup wonders in 2019.

Stokes said: “I can’t give that too much credit. All five days the boys were phenomenal with the racquet, the ball and the field.

“I think today was perfectly laid out for how we want to do things looking ahead. We don’t want to back down and stand still.

“Today just wow, unbelievable. I do not know what to do. It’s not just about today, it’s about the four days before. The work ethic that everyone had prior to today was fantastic.

“You don’t win from just one day. How we fought our way back after 500 on the board. Incredible, incredible test match. A great testament to everyone’s character and resilience.

“It blows Headingley, it blows Lord’s and the World Cup final. It was amazing.’

England hero Bairstow added: “Look at the crowd that showed up at Trent Bridge on day five of a Test match – 13,000. People sometimes question Test cricket and the way it’s been played over a period of time.

“But there were more than 500 goals scored in both first innings and 300 chased in the last innings. If this isn’t an advertisement for Test Cricket, then I don’t know what is.

“It was fantastic to have so many spectators on day five. It was full of excitement, everything you want in Test cricket. It was so fresh – it was great.’

England can complete a clean win in the third and final Test at Headingley next week.
